Pennant undergoes Reds medical
Jermaine Pennnt is having a medical this morning at Liverpool with a view to completing a £6.2m (€9m) move from Birmingham.
The former England Under-21 winger was believed to have travelled to Merseyside last night for talks, and is expected to fly out to Switzerland later today if the medical and contract details are completed.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez took his squad to their usual training camp yesterday, and 23-year-old Pennant is likely to join them once the details of his move have been completed.
His debut could come in Saturday’s friendly against Kaiserslautern in Liechtenstein.
Liverpool are also likely to confirm Scott Carson as their second-choice goalkeeper after new contract talks.
Carson was part of England’s World Cup squad in Germany, having spent much of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, who have been trying to extend that deal this summer.
Portsmouth have also been trying to sign Carson on a season-loan, but with the prospect of Jerzy Dudek being used in a possible transfer exchange shortly, the opportunity is now there for Carson to assume the role as Jose Reina’s understudy.
Carson joined Liverpool from Leeds for £750,000 (€1.09m) in January 2005, and it is believed that an improved five-year contract has been agreed.
