Voting age ‘should be lowered to 16’
25/07/2006 - 19:37:37The Green Party today urged the Government to lower the voting age to 16.
It wants the age lowered in local elections to start with, and then brought in at a national level.
Family Affairs Spokesperson Dan Boyle announced the plan at the launch of the party's Children's policy today.
He said many young people were alienated from politics due to the current voting age.
“There is an age group under eighteen that are becoming more interested in politics and more understanding of the role that they can play to meet their own needs through politics,” he said.
“We think that if the voting age is lowered in those circumstances there will be positive results.”
