Most refugees only recognised after appeal
24/07/2006 - 11:57:06The majority of asylum-seekers who have been granted refugee status in Ireland in the past six years initially had their applications rejected, according to the Irish Refugee Council.
The council says 59% of the 6,814 people granted refugee status since 2000 were only recognised on appeal.
The largest numbers of asylum seekers in each of the last six years have come from Nigeria and Romania,
More than 16,500 non-nationals have also received residency in Ireland by being the parent of an Irish citizen child.
