Improving roads would help save lives, admits Cullen
Minister for Transport Martin Cullen admitted this afternoon that better roads would save more lives.
He was commenting on Fine Gael's new road safety policy, which calls for greater attention to the conditions of road surfaces and signage.
Minister Cullen said the new Road Traffic Act, along with further investments in road infrastructure would all play a role in saving lives. But he said driver behaviour was still the main area in need of change.
“The more new roads we can roll out, that is a contributing factor to road safety, but it's not of itself going to solve everything,” he said.
“It’s a combination of new infrastructure, along with stronger legislation which we now have.
“It’s a combination of better enforcement, and, at the end of the day, it’s a combination of all of us as drivers on the road accepting that we have individual responsibility and we're going to change our attitude when we get on that road.”
