Fine Gael unveils proposals to tackle road deaths

24/07/2006 - 12:03:25
Fine Gael has launched a new policy aimed at improving Irish road conditions and motoring standards.

Driver behaviour in relation to speeding and drink-driving is blamed for many of the deaths on Ireland's roads every year.

However, Fine Gael says road conditions also contribute significantly to the carnage.

The party is proposing a road accident investigation unit that would collate information on the factors that contribute to crashes, as well as training facilities to improve driving standards.

It also says it will - if elected to power at the next election - invest more in road signage and engage in an on-going publicity campaign to highlight standards for safe tyres.
