Woman awarded €12,500 over workplace harassment

18/07/2006 - 08:21:22
The Equality Tribunal has awarded almost €12,500 to a woman who was sexually harassed in her workplace.

The woman took a case under the Employment Equality Act after being subjected to a campaign of harassment at a Dublin taxi company.

The complaint was based on four particular incidents, including the throwing of dead fish into her working area and the placing of offensive and humiliating pictures around the office with her name on them.

She said she believed she was targeted because of her gender and her gay relationship and underwent treatment for stress as a result.

While the company condemned the actions, it acknowledged that it had no harassment policy in place.

In its ruling, the Equality Tribunal said it was awarding the maximum possible compensation due to the "grossly offensive" nature of the harassment.
