Two families are in mourning this morning following the deaths of two teenagers in separate drowning incidents.

A 14-year-old boy from Killucan, Co Westmeath, lost his life after getting into difficulty while swimming in Lough Owel, near Mullingar, yesterday evening.

In Co Antrim, meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy drowned yesterday afternoon after getting caught by a rip-tide at Whiterocks beach in Portrush.

He was recovered from the water by a lifeboat crew, but attempts to revive him failed.

A man in his 60s was also hospitalised after getting into difficulties while trying to save the youngster.
