Police cleared of wrongdoing over Belfast teen’s death
Police in the North have been cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with the death of a man following a pursuit two years ago.
Nineteen-year-old Raymond Robinson drowned in a stream after becoming trapped beneath a PSNI vehicle that was chasing him in the Whiteabbey area of Belfast in April 2004.
The police were responding to reports of a car being driven erratically.
Mr Robinson initially fled in the vehicle before trying to escape from the officers on foot
He died when the patrol car involved in the chase slid down a steep bank towards a stream, trapping the teenager underwater.
In her report into the incident, the Police Ombudsman says the police were not speeding at the time and no individual officers were guilty of any misconduct.
However, she said the PSNI needed to improve its training and pursuit policies, which she described as "severely deficient".
