18/07/2006 - 15:32:21
The killer of Cobh woman Sheola Keaney concealed her remains under scrap metal, it was confirmed today.

The investigation into her death was upgraded to murder last night, after post-mortem results showed she had died a violent death. It is understood that she had been strangled.

House-to-house enquiries were being carried out today in Cobh, as gardaí try to track down her killer.

The teen’s partially-clothed body was found under scrap metal in a laneway which links Norwood Hill to Cobh Pirates rugby club.

The popular teenager was last seen on Friday morning on her way home from a barbecue in Rushbrooke.

The remains of the teenager will be removed tomorrow evening at 7pm to Cobh Cathedral, from the local hospital mortuary.

Her body will be buried in the town’s new cemetery on Thursday, after 2pm Mass.

Inspector Martin Dorney said today that teams of uniformed and plain clothes gardaí were carrying out house-to-house enquiries in the Rushbrooke and Newtown areas.

“A search is also taking place this morning at the Cobh Pirates Rugby Club,” he added.

Detectives later conducted a search at the scene where Sheola’s body was located. Inspector Dorney said a couple of hundred people have already been identified by gardaí. He said gardaí are keeping an open mind on the murder and that nobody has been questioned in relation to it.

He is appealing for help from anyone who saw Sheola between 8pm on Thursday night and 10am on Friday morning, to contact the incident room at Cobh Garda Station on (021) 4908530.
