New project aims to rid urban areas of graffiti

16/07/2006 - 10:45:20
A new project aimed at ridding the country of graffiti is to commence shortly.

Pilot programmes will originally focus on Dublin, Galway and Bray in Co Wicklow, with the possibility of spreading to the rest of the country.

These "graffiti blackspots" were chosen by the Department of Justice in conjunction with local authorities and the gardaí.

The project’s overall budget for this year is €3m.

It will involve a major clean-up at first followed by a rapid response programme aimed at keeping public areas graffiti-free.

A steering group will oversee the project and an independent evaluation will be carried out to determine its effectiveness.

If the measures are deemed successful, they could be rolled out across the country.
