Co Cork ‘two plus one’ road scheme to be extended

16/07/2006 - 10:17:51
New ‘two plus one’ traffic schemes are to be introduced across the country following the success of the pilot project in Co Cork.

Since the system was introduced on the N20 from Rathduff to Mallow, there have been no deaths or head-on collisions on the notorious stretch of road.

The scheme involved putting a third lane on a normal two-lane road to allow for overtaking.

The overtaking lane swaps sides every two kilometres, while a barrier in the centre of the road prevents overtaking in the single lane stretches.

The National Roads Authority is now introducing the system in Monaghan and Tipperary.
