EPA seeks EU approval for second emissions plan

The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking EU approval for its second National Allocation Plan for emissions trading.

It is part of the strategy to ensure Ireland meet targets set down under the Kyoto treaty.

Companies which break their allocations will be fined €100 per tonne under the plan.

Taxpayers will have to contribute up to €500m in fines for state facilities that emit too much carbon.
