Brennan: Relationship with GPA 'is solid'

Nickey Brennan has insisted that the GAA's relationship with the Gaelic Players Association is a solid one - despite rumours of rumbling tension between the two bodies.

Speaking at today's announcement of Toyota Ireland's sponsorship renewal of the GAA, Brennan was thoroughly positive when asked about the current state of play between the Association and the players' body.

The former Kilkenny hurler said: "I made a commitment that we would improve our whole relationship with the players. We have met with the GPA on three occasions at this stage.

"It is interesting to note that we have had one Central Council meeting and two management committee meetings so in fairness, in that period of time, it does show a serious commitment.

"We are continuing to pursue a number of areas with them. We are keeping our discussions close to our chest but we have developed a cordial relationship.

"I think the relationship is solid. That's not to say that there are not plenty of challenges ahead, but certainly it is my intention to put the relationship on a far more formal footing and I am determined to achieve that," added the 52-year-old.

Offaly footballer Ciaran McManus and Galway footballer Declan Meehan were present at this afternoon's sponsorship announcement. Car company Toyota are extending their sponsorship of the GAA by another two years.

Brennan, a five-time All-Ireland SHC winner as a player, felt it was only right that McManus and Meehan attended the launch at Croke Park.

"We are very conscious that in Croke Park and Castlebar next Sunday and other locations next weekend that the players are making an enormous input towards the Association," he said.

"The crowds that they are bringing out are allowing us to filter our monies down to infrastructural development, coaching development and numerous other initiatives around the country."
