Headline crimes down slightly in second quarter of 2006
13/07/2006 - 13:24:09Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has announced a slight reduction in headline crime figures during the second quarter of this year.
Figures published by the minister today show that the total number of crimes reported to the Gardaí was down 1% compared to the same period in 2005.
Of the 25 categories included, 12 showed decreases in the number of crimes committed, while eight recorded increases.
Mr McDowell says headline crime has now fallen in 11 of the 14 quarters since he began publishing quarterly crime statistics in 2003.
However, the minister also says there is no room for complacency and gardaí must continue to use their resources in the best possible manner to tackle all forms of crime.
