Audit reveals major improvement in hospital cleanliness

13/07/2006 - 09:24:16
The second national audit of hygiene standards in Irish hospitals has revealed a major improvement since the end of last year.

The audits were ordered in response to concerns about the spread of so-called superbugs like MRSA in hospitals around the country.

The first, published last November, said 48% of hospitals had bad hygiene standards, while 43% were rated as fair and only 9% were found to have good levels of cleanliness.

The second audit, however, says the number of hospitals with bad standards has now fallen to just 4%, with 36% now described as fair and 60% considered to have good cleanliness.

The next audit is due out sometime in the autumn.
