SDLP leader's nephew improving after fall

11/07/2006 - 22:52:50
A nephew of SDLP leader Mark Durkan tonight showed signs of improvement after suffering head injuries in a fall from a ladder.

Mark H Durkan, 28, a Derry City councillor, was injured yesterday while attempting to reach an upstairs window outside his parents’ home on Glen Road in the city.

In a statement tonight his parents, Patrick and Gay, paid tribute to the Altnagelvin Hospital staff who treated him and to the many well-wishers who had contacted the family.

Mr and Mrs Durkan said: “Yesterday was a very difficult day for all of Mark’s family and friends.

“Mark has thankfully made substantive progress under the quality care of the staff at Altnagelvin Hospital.

“Mark is extremely grateful to neighbours, carers, well-wishers and all those who prayed for him.

“We hope he will continue to make further good progress in the days and weeks ahead.”

Mr Durkan was found after his fall by a neighbour.

He was elected last year as a councillor in the Northlands ward on Derry City Council where the SDLP is the largest party.
