More needs to be done to stop road deaths - Harney

11/07/2006 - 17:43:59
The Tánaiste has said only a combination of extra resources, greater awareness and more caution among drivers will help cut the number of deaths on the country’s roads.

Twelve people have been killed in traffic accidents in the past two days - the latest a cyclist in Westmeath.

Describing the deaths as tragic, Ms Harney says the issue of road safety is not just one for the gardaí or the Government to deal with.

She says a lot more needs to be done to encourage more responsible driving.

“The issue is not just a question for the gardaí,” she said today.

“Any death is a tragedy, but particularly to see young people lose their life in this way.”

Minister Harney added: “Obviously there's a lot the Government can do by way of legislation and we've just passed legislation.

“There are more resources going into this area and heightened awareness around our safety, but at the end of the day, we all have to take responsibility for our own driving and I think we need to do an awful lot more.”
