Govt under pressure to provide more road safety resources
11/07/2006 - 11:49:58The Government is coming under pressure to do more in the area of road safety following the deaths of 12 people in a string of accidents in the last 48 hours.
Fine Gael's Olivia Mitchell is blaming the high level of deaths on the driver testing system, which she described today as a disaster.
She said a new system was needed to ensure that young drivers are properly trained before they drive on a public road.
Ms Mitchell also said there was a need for more gardaí on the roads to deter poor driving and to make sure the penalty points system is properly enforced.
Labour Party TD Roisin Shorthall, meanwhile, said the Government's road safety strategy was obviously not working and more resources should be provided to make sure the carnage is not allowed to continue.
