General election expected to be held in latter half of May

There are growing expectations that the Government will decide to hold the next general election at the end of May.

The ballot must be held before June 6, but May is considered more suitable in order to avoid a clash with the state exams.

The current thinking favours either May 18 or 25 as the election date.

This would allow the Government to run its full five-year term and also benefit from tax and other concessions that may be included in the next Budget.
