Blood Transfusion Service scraps €14m CJD filter machine
11/07/2006 - 13:43:14The Irish Blood Transfusion Service has scrapped a new machine designed to clean CJD from donated blood.
The service spent €14m on the filter system last year.
However, in its annual report for 2005, it says trials on the system were discontinued amid fears that it was not working adequately and that CJD could still be passed through blood donations.
Elsewhere, the report says blood donations increased by 1.4% last year, but demand also rose, resulting in a major shortage in June 2005, when hospitals were forced to halt operations for three days.
