Adams claims IRA abused human rights with disappeared

11/07/2006 - 19:07:25
Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has said the way the IRA dealt with the bodies of the disappeared was a human rights abuse.

He also revealed that, in several cases, individual members of the IRA who were involved in the murders 25 years ago have re-visited the burial sites with a British forensic expert to try and locate the remains.

For the past ten years Gerry Adams has been mediating between the families of the nine people the IRA has admitted it killed and secretly buried, the two governments and more recently a British forensic expert.

The IRA met the forensic expert ten times over a seven month period and on some occasions IRA members returned with him to the sites where they had carried out the killings in the early 1970s.

Mr Adams said today he believes the IRA has located the sites as precisely as possible.

The forensic expert has forwarded his subsequent report to the two governments with recommendations on how to proceed, although neither the families nor Sinn Féin has seen it.
