Unions seek delay in decision on sugar reform compensation

11/07/2006 - 12:10:59
The unions representing workers at Greencore have asked the Government to delay a decision on allocating compensation arising from the EU's recent sugar reforms.

Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan is due to decide this week on how to allocate the €144m compensation secured by Ireland in light of the reforms.

However, the unions at Irish Sugar/Greencore want the decision delayed until management implements a Labour Court recommendation on redundancy terms.

The dispute over the recommendation is currently being examined by the National Implementation Body set up to oversee compliance with social partnership agreements.
