Gilded heads Hannon sprint team
Last month’s Queen Mary Stakes heroine Gilded heads a list of 78 horses still engaged in the Weatherbys Super Sprint, run at Newbury on July 22.
Richard Hannon’s flying filly landed a five-timer at the Royal meeting and could bid to extend that sequence to six in the £135,000 sprint.
Assistant trainer Richard Hannon Jnr explained: “Gilded has every chance of running in the Weatherbys Super Sprint, although it’s a fair way off yet.
“She was bought with the race in mind but we need to discuss it with the owner. She’s fine at the moment.”
Hannon has enjoyed tremendous success in the race over the years, winning it six times since 1992 with horses such as Lyric Fantasy and Risky, and he looks certain to be well-represented again.
Besides Gilded, the Wiltshire-based handler is responsible for a further five entries headed by Cav Okay and Sonny Red who finished third and fourth respectively in the Norfolk Stakes.
Among a host of other interesting entries is Sylvester Kirk’s Elhamri, who lifted the Windsor Castle Stakes at the Royal meeting.
“We are giving serious consideration to running Elhamri in the Super Sprint at Newbury,” he explained.
“Even with his penalty for winning the Windsor Castle he’s going to be well in on his rating, although it’s a very competitive event.
“He’s come out of his last race really well – in fact he’s jumping, bucking, skipping and kicking!
“My other two entries are Buckie Massa and Vietnam – due to make their debuts on Thursday and Monday respectively – so we’ll see how they get on, but Elhamri would be the main contender, no doubt.”
