Fine Gael: Govt should be concerned at opinion poll

02/07/2006 - 15:03:29
Fine Gael has said the Government should be worried about the latest opinion poll released today.

The poll shows Fianna Fáil's support has fallen by one percentage point to 34 percent, while the PDs have remained on 3%.

The news is not good for the alternative government either, with Fine Gael staying on 26 percent support, and Labour falling two points to twelve.

But Fine Gael's Olivia Mitchell earlier rejected claims that her party is failing to capitalise on Fianna Fáil's losses.

She said: “Outside of a general election it is very hard to focus people’s minds on electing a government but if people want a change of government they will be focusing on Fine Gael.”

Meanwhile Defence Minister Willie O’Dea admitted that his party has a mountain to climb in terms of gaining votes before the next general election.

But he said: “If there was a general election and only 34 percent of people only gave us their first preference votes I wouldn’t be happy with that, of course I wouldn’t…..but I have seen polls closer to elections which bore no relationship whatever to the results of the actual election.”
