Fine Gael and Labour leaders call for early general election

02/07/2006 - 14:24:29
The Dáil is set to debate a joint motion from Fine Gael and Labour this week calling for an early general election.

In a statement issued by the two party leaders this afternoon, Enda Kenny and Pat Rabbitte say the motion will criticise the coalition government's record.

It lists thirteen key areas in which Fine Gael and Labour say the government has failed to deliver, including crime, health, education and value for taxpayers' money, despite the continuing economic boom.

Enda Kenny and Pat Rabbitte say the Fianna Fáil / PD administration is fractured, arrogant and tired.

They say coalition partners are drifting aimlessly and the government is now battered and bruised by its own incompetence and the emergence for the first time in almost ten years of a clear alternative government.

Ministers are out of touch they say and the public is hungry for change.

The country is due to go to the polls, probably this time next year.

But the two opposition leaders say the interests of the people would best be served by an early general election.
