28/06/2006 - 07:52:33
A bus packed with passengers going from Moscow to a neighbouring region overturned outside the capital early today, killing six people and injuring 20.

The accident took place at about 5.50am (2.50am Irish Time) when a bus travelling to the city of Kaluga, about 125 miles) south-west of Moscow, turned over, said Viktor Beltsov, spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry.

Six people died and twenty were admitted to hospital with various injuries, Beltsov said. The cause of the accident was being investigated.

Fatal road accidents are frequent in Russia, where many drivers do not observe the rules, few wear seat belts and roads are often poorly lit and poorly maintained, especially in the provinces.

Abuse of alcohol among drivers is frequent as well.
