McDowell willing to consider home defence legislation
28/06/2006 - 08:26:32Justice Minister Michael McDowell has signalled his willingness to consider new legislation giving homeowners greater rights to tackle intruders.
Mr McDowell was speaking during a Dáil debate last night on a private members' bill from Fine Gael that would allow people to use reasonable violence to protect their homes from burglars.
The minister rejected the Fine Gael proposals as poorly thought-out and over-the-top.
However, he said the matter should be discussed further by an all-party committee along with similar measures put forward by his PD colleague Senator Tom Morrissey.
