McDowell willing to consider home defence legislation

Justice Minister Michael McDowell has signalled his willingness to consider new legislation giving homeowners greater rights to tackle intruders.

Mr McDowell was speaking during a Dáil debate last night on a private members' bill from Fine Gael that would allow people to use reasonable violence to protect their homes from burglars.

The minister rejected the Fine Gael proposals as poorly thought-out and over-the-top.

However, he said the matter should be discussed further by an all-party committee along with similar measures put forward by his PD colleague Senator Tom Morrissey.
