Ireland facing EU action over driver compensation laws
28/06/2006 - 12:26:07The European Commission has announced its intention to refer Ireland to the European Court of Justice over its rules on compensation for uninsured drivers.
At present, Irish law excludes any compensation payments from the Irish Insurance Bureau to motorists in accidents where all the vehicles involved are uninsured.
This applies even to motorists who are not responsible for causing the crash, something the EC believes is in contravention of EU law.
It is bringing Ireland before the Court of Justice due to the Government's refusal to meet requests for the law to be modified.
