Japan's top court throws out war shrine appeals
27/06/2006 - 08:42:40Japan’s top court today threw out two appeals challenging the constitutionality of prime minister Junichiro Koizumi’s visits to a Tokyo war shrine, news reports said.
The Supreme Court rejected two suits filed by relatives of Japan’s war dead and religious leaders, according to Kyodo News agency.
The plaintiffs claimed Koizumi’s visits to Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine violated the country’s constitution, which stipulates a division between religion and the state.
A court official refused to confirm the ruling. No other details were immediately available.
