Monty out of French Open
Colin Montgomerie has pulled out of this week’s French Open because of “mental exhaustion” according to his management company.
The 43-year-old Scot had been due to play for the eighth successive week, but has now decided to take a rest before starting his countdown to the Open at next week’s European Open in Dublin.
Nine days ago, of course, Montgomerie’s long wait for a first major title looked as if it might end at the US Open.
But, joint leader on the final fairway, he missed the green with a seven-iron and then three-putted for a double-bogey six that resulted in him finishing one behind Australian Geoff Ogilvy.
Last week he was fourth in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, but complained of severe fatigue in the third round and then bogeyed the penultimate hole to end up two behind Paul Casey.
