Govt 'underestimating future demand for port facilities'
27/06/2006 - 11:58:59The employers' body IBEC has said Ireland is not building enough port facilities to meet demand in the coming years.
The organisation claimed today that the Government was seriously underestimating the amount of freight containers that will pass through Irish ports between now and 2014.
The Government has predicted a 35% increase in freight traffic over that period, but IBEC believes the amount will be double that figure.
It says more capacity is needed in both Dublin and Cork to meet this demand and prevent congestion at existing ports which would increase costs and reduce efficiency for Irish firms.
