Goal king McTiernan on a roll for Sligo
Sligo Rovers 3 Derry City 1
Paul McTiernan scored twice for the second match running as Sligo stunned Derry at the Showgrounds to avenge an early season defeat at the Brandywell tonight.
Title-chasing Derry had substitute Gareth McGlynn sent off after just 20 minutes - six minutes after coming on for Paddy McCourt - for a bad challenge on Keith Foy.
Derry were already behind to a seventh minute goal from McTiernan who latched onto Conor O’Grady’s through ball to shoot home.
But Derry hit back right on half time when Sean Hargan’s long throw bounced up for Killian Brennan who found the net with a terrific 25-yard drive.
Foy restored Sligo’s lead with a brilliant free kick on 58 minutes.
McTiernan then hit his second to seal it nine minutes later when Foy’s cross was sidefooted home from close range.
