TUI says new partnership deal is not fair and balanced
The incoming president of the Teachers Union of Ireland has disputed the Taoiseach's claim that the new social partnership deal is fair and balanced.
Tim O'Meara was speaking as the union holds a special congress today to decide whether to urge its members to accept or reject the Towards 2016 agreement.
Yesterday, the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, said the deal would be good for workers.
However, the TUI's executive has already decided to recommend rejection of the document due to what it believes are insufficient pay rises and a lack of commitment to provide extra resources for education.
Delegates at today's meeting will decide today whether to back this view before the TUI's 13,000 members hold a postal ballot on the agreement.
Speaking ahead of the gathering, Mr O'Meara said the Government was trying to sell the deal as something it is not.
"The Taoiseach stated yesterday that it was fair and balanced," he said. "I think any objective person looking at it will see that it's not fair and balanced.
"It tips rights to employers, at the same depriving workers and depriving unions of their power to correct difficulties with working conditions."
