Teaching Council seeks legal advice on vetting plans

The Teaching Council is seeking legal advice about what kind of offences could prevent teachers from working with children in the classroom.

A new vetting procedure is being brought in from this September to ensure that people intending to work with children have not committed any offences which would make them unsuitable.

There are 55,000 teachers in this country at the moment, but the Garda vetting unit has said that it will only be able to assess 5,000 teachers a year.

This means it would be 2012 before all working teachers have been through the process.
