Pompey make approach for Petrov
Portsmouth could pave the way for Stilian Petrov‘s exit from Celtic after opening talks with the Scottish champions.
The 26-year-old midfielder submitted a transfer request towards the end of last season, which was rejected by Parkhead bosses.
Bulgaria’s captain reported back for pre-season training yesterday, on the same day Neil Lennon pledged his future to the Glasgow club.
And manager Gordon Strachan was hopeful Petrov would also be part of his plans when they begin the defence of their Bank of Scotland Premier League title on July 29.
However, reports today suggest Portsmouth are planning to test Celtic‘s resolve with a £3.5million bid for the highly-rated midfielder.
And Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric has confirmed talks are taking place between the two clubs.
“We’re having dialogue with Celtic to get him to Portsmouth,” he said.
“It’s in the hands of (chief executive) Peter Storrie, who does our negotiations, and Celtic.
“Whether we’re able to put a deal together remains to be seen.”
However, he is hoping the chance to test himself in the Barclays Premiership will be enough to lure Petrov to Fratton Park, after manager Harry Redknapp identified him as one of his top targets for the new season.
“Harry likes his ability to score goals – he is the complete midfielder Harry is looking for,” Mandaric told BBC Scotland.
“I would be surprised if he didn’t want to come to the Premier League.
“We would like to have him.”
