Jang ahead in New York
Reigning Women’s British Open Champion Jeong Jang set her sights on a second LPGA title after a third-round 66 in the Wegmans LPGA in Rochester, New York.
Jang led on 11 under par 205 and by one shot from fellow South Korean, Mi Hyun Kim, who had a 67, and American 20-year-old Brittany Lang, who eagled the long 17th in a 69.
Italy’s Silvia Cavalleri, with a 68 for eight under 208 was the leading European in a tie for fourth place with Americans Marcy Hart (66) and Wendy Ward (70) and another Korean, Soo Young Yoo (66).
Korean Shi Hyun Ahn, who had led by two shots overnight, slipped back with a 75 and was six shots off the lead on six under par.
England’s Johanna Head, the only British player to make the cut, had her poorest score of the tournament, and a 74 left her in a tie for 69th place on six over par 222.
The tournament emphasised the strength in depth of the Korean players on the LPGA Tour, with six in the top 18 going into the final 18 holes.
The last three trophies have been lifted by Koreans, and Jang is now in pole position to become the eighth from her country to win in the 13 tournaments to date this season.
But in tomorrow’s final round Jang, who led from start to finish in winning the British Open at Royal Birkdale last year, will be hoping to banish memories of the Corning Classic earlier this month when she led going into the final round but crumbled with a closing 76.
