Kemp holds lead

23/06/2006 - 20:20:35
Australian rookie Sarah Kemp holds a one-stroke lead in the Estoril Ladies Open of Portugal but gale-force winds caused havoc at Quinta Da Marinha with the majority of the field still to complete their rounds.

Play was suspended at 3.25pm local time because balls were moving on the greens of the exposed cliff-top course on the west coast of Portugal and the conditions did not improve.

Kemp was one of only 42 players to have completed 36 holes, with the remaining 84 players resuming their rounds at 7.30am local time tomorrow.

The 20-year-old from New South Wales led on three under par after carding a level-par 72 to follow her 69 yesterday.

“I’m actually from a golf course that is exactly like this I’ve learned to keep the ball really low so that’s what I’ve been doing,” she said.

“This place is my favourite place in Europe so far. As soon as I got here I loved everything – it reminds me of home.”

Joint overnight leader Laurette Maritz, from South Africa, remained well in contention after carding a three-over par 75 after a 67 yesterday to be two under for the tournament.

Thursday’s other leader, Australia’s Anne-Marie Knight, is two under after six holes of her second round.

England’s Kirsty Taylor and Trish Johnson and French duo Gwladys Nocera, the current European number one, and Maria Beautell are also on that mark after three holes with Wales’ Becky Brewerton in eighth on one under playing her fourth.
