23/06/2006 - 10:32:14
Gardaí have named the 27-year-old man who died this morning five days after he was assaulted as he walked along Dublin’s O'Connell St.

Alan Barber, from Lucan, had been in a critical condition in intensive care at Beaumont Hospital since the attack, which occurred at 3am on Sunday, but he died last night at around 9pm.

Gardaí have appealed for three men who were captured on CCTV footage on O’Connell St Lower shortly after the incident to come forward.

Detectives have described the attacker as around 6ft and of strong build with a close-cropped hairstyle. He was wearing dark jeans with a horizontal-striped T-shirt.

They also want to speak to a woman who called at Pearse St station around the time of the attack but ran out when a garda came to speak to her.

The man’s body has been removed to the city morgue for a post mortem examination which will be carried out later today.
