Kate Winslet opens unit for sick babies
Hollywood star Kate Winslet flew back home from the set of her latest movie to officially open a new unit for sick babies today.
The Titanic actress was on hand to perform the ribbon cutting duties as the neonatal intensive care unit at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital opened its doors following a £1.2m (€1.8m) makeover.
The 30-year-old mother-of-two, was mobbed by dozens of excited youngsters as she toured the impressive new facilities at the unit, which were largely paid for by a local fundraising drive.
The Tiny Lives campaign worked tirelessly over the past two years to raise cash to refurbish the unit, which will provide top quality care for more than 500 sick and premature babies.
“It was a great honour to officially open this wonderful baby unit,” the four-time Oscar-nominated actress said.
“The Tiny Lives campaign touched my heart and it is clear it has made the world of difference to the parents. I’m thrilled to be part of this special day.”
Organisers said she had “pulled out all the stops” to attend today’s event, and jetted in from the US after finishing filming, The Holiday, which also stars Jude Law and Cameron Diaz.
The down-to-earth A-lister spent two hours touring the building and chatting to children and adults who had been cared for at the previous unit – and had been invited back today as guests of honour.
Tiny Lives launched their campaign in April 2004, following a grant of £500,000 from the NHS.
They achieved their daunting target of raising £700,000 in May this year, after thousands of people took part in a range of fundraising activities.
Karen Willis, fundraising manager, said: “It was great Kate could come today and add some Hollywood glamour. She’s wanted to be involved for a while but never had the time, but she pulled out all the stops to be here today.
“It was the icing on the cake.”
