Wages of state body chairpersons to almost double

21/06/2006 - 07:38:26
The Government has reportedly approved moves to almost double the wages paid to businesspeople who chair the boards of major State bodies.

Reports this morning said the cabinet had approved plans by Finance minister Brian Cowen to increase the wages of these chairpersons from €19,000 to €35,000 per annum.

The increase will apply to their chairpersons of companies like Aer Lingus, Bord Gais, the ESB and RTÉ.

Mr Cowen's department reportedly argued that the pay increases were warranted due to the increased commitment required of such people in recent years.

This morning's reports said other less hefty increases had also been approved for the chairs and directors of smaller state bodies like FÁS and Enterprise Ireland.
