Farmers welcome Government stance on upcoming WTO talks
21/06/2006 - 07:40:50Farmers have welcomed the Irish Government's opposition to further EU concessions on agriculture during upcoming world trade talks.
Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan has said she is vehemently opposed to any concessions that would go beyond the reform of the EU Common Agriculture Policy agreed a number of years ago.
The ICMSA has welcomed this stance, saying it trusts that the Irish Government and other like-minded EU countries will take a similarly uncompromising stance when the WTO talks begin next Tuesday.
The World Trade Organisation talks are due to get underway in Geneva next week, with the US and other nations demanding that the EU cut subsidies for farmers.
