Tehran ready for international talks

20/06/2006 - 16:23:05
Iran’s foreign minister said today that Tehran was ready to enter international talks over with package of incentives aimed at resolving the stand-off over its nuclear programme, but without any pre-conditions.

Manouchehr Mottaki told journalists in the Azerbaijani capital Baku that Iran wanted to obtain clarifications on the proposals made by six UN powers.

“I mean there can be some questions and some doubts, which need clarifications and that is why starting negotiations between Iran and other parties, of course without any pre-conditions, can help all the parties come together closer,” he said.

The package calls on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment as a condition for the start of talks, in which the United States would participate.

The incentives are meant to persuade Iran to stop enriching uranium, a process that can make nuclear fuel for a power plant or fissile material for an atomic bomb.

Iran says enriching uranium is its country’s unalienable right, and that it is reviewing the package and will propose amendments to the deal.
