SF: Government dragging its feet on issue sexual violence

20/06/2006 - 15:31:27
Sinn Féin justice spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh has accusing the Government of dragging its feet on the issue of sexual violence.

Although welcoming the Government’s publication of the ‘Sexual Assault Treatment Services - A Review’ report, Deputy Ó Snodaigh called for an urgent implementation of the report’s recommendations.

“I welcome the fact that the report is finally being published today,” he said. “It was ready last November and the delay is a terrible testament to the priority that the government affords this issue.

“The report identifies shortfalls in the existing services for survivors of sexual violence and makes proposals to address these and it is essential that a similar delay does not characterise the implementation of these recommendations as well.

“The Government has been dragging its feet and passing the buck on the issue of sexual violence.

“These recommendations must be realised as a matter of urgency and there can be no excuse for any further delays.”
