Pets to make way for humans in California cemetery

Frantic pet owners in Colma, California are flocking to the town’s only pet cemetery, known as the “City of Souls,” after hearing that some of the 13,000 animals buried there will have to be dug up.

The owner of the property wants to use the land for a human cemetery.

For many pet owners, the prospect of seeing their pets exhumed from Pet’s Rest cemetery has stirred up grief they thought had been put to rest.

“At no time was I told he was being buried on leased land,” said Cathryn Hrudicka, 53, whose dog Poquito was buried at Pet’s Rest.

Pet’s Rest owner Phillip C’de Baca sent letters in May to the owners of 1,000 pets buried at the eastern end of the cemetery, giving them two options: relocation or cremation, both free of charge.

The owners were given 15 days to decide.
