Dublin prices pushing further ahead of rest of country

15/06/2006 - 13:33:56
The cost of living in Dublin is pushing further ahead of the rest of the country, according to the latest analysis by the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO said today that prices for a sample of 73 items were 3.5% higher in Dublin than the rest of the country in May of this year.

This compares to a 3.1% differential in November and a 3.2% differential last May.

However, when drinks are taken out of the equation, the average price difference falls to just 0.3%, which is the same as that recorded a year ago.

The CSO figures show that meat, fish, fruit and vegetables are generally more expensive in Dublin, but other foods such as past are considerably cheaper.

Off-licence charges are largely similar in both areas, but the cost of drinks in a pub is 5% higher in Dublin.

On the other hand, average petrol and diesel prices are slightly lower in the capital.
