Peace group demands inspections of US military flights

14/06/2006 - 12:22:11
The Peace and Neutrality Alliance is demanding that the Government instruct gardaí to board and inspect all US military flights landing at Shannon Airport.

The anti-war group is making the call in response to yesterday's revelation that the US transported a prisoner through the Co Clare facility without seeking the consent of the Government.

A report last week from the Council of Europe also accused Ireland of colluding with the CIA's controversial rendition scheme by allowing planes involved in the scheme to land at Shannon.

Speaking at a press conference in Dublin today, PANA chairman Roger Cole said the Government should live up to its international duties and instruct gardaí to carry out inspections to make sure the law is not being broken.

"There's no question that we are in collusion with torture by allowing these planes to land in Shannon and it should stop immediately," he said. "At the very least, the planes should be searched."
