Hannah arrested at tree protest
Actress Daryl Hannah was among protesters who climbed into a walnut tree or chained themselves to concrete-filled barrels when Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputies evicted people from an urban community garden.
More than 40 people were arrested, including the Splash actress.
Authorities used a fire engine to bring down Hannah and another tree-sitter, who raised their fists as they were removed.
“I’m very confident this is the morally right thing to do, to take a principled stand in solidarity with the farmers,” she said by mobile phone before the fire officers were hoisted into the tree.
About 350 people grew produce and flowers on the 14 acres of privately-owned land. The garden has been there for more than a decade, but the landowner, Ralph Horowitz, now wants to replace it with a warehouse.
The effort to save the farm attracted the support of activists and celebrities including Hannah, country singer Willie Nelson, actor Danny Glover, folk singer Joan Baez and tree sitter Julia Butterfly Hill.
Supporters moved on to the property full-time in May and occupied the walnut tree after the judge issued the eviction order.
