Pensioner hurt trying to stop car thief

A 74-year-old woman was injured after she held onto her car as a thief drove off in it, police said tonight.

The pensioner noticed a man sitting in her black Renault Modus outside her home in the Newtonbreda area of Belfast.

It is believed the suspect stole the keys from inside the property.

A PSNI spokesman said: “The woman attempted to prevent the car from being stolen by holding onto a door handle however, she was pulled to ground when the car was driven away.”

The pensioner suffered a head injury, cuts and bruising but did not require hospital treatment.

The suspect is in his late 30s, of medium build and had short black hair.

He was wearing a black and white jumper.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, which happened around 10.30am on Friday, is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000.
