Labour calls for probe into alleged US 'rendition' flights at Shannon

Labour are calling for an independent investigation into whether there were any secret arrangements between the Irish and American governments regarding the use of Shannon for secret CIA "rendition" flights.

Ireland was one of 14 countries found by the Council of Europe to have colluded with the US in the alleged transport of torture victims.

Next week the Government will be questioned in a Dáil debate about the alleged collusion.

Labour TD Eamon Gilmore said today that Ireland can no longer accept the word of the US that the flights did not contain people who were being transported abroad for interrogation.
