Concern over rise in alcoholism for women in 30s and 40s

There are concerns over the number of Irish women drinking heavily in their late 30s and early 40s.

The Rutland Centre for Addiction has indicated that, while many alcoholic men have drunk heavily since as far back as their teenage years, women are becoming addicted in their 30s and 40s.

Fifty percent of patients at the centre are female, up from 30% in previous years.

The Sunday Independent claims many are consuming wine as their drink of choice, starting perhaps with a glass of wine with their dinner, then drinking it at a non-meal times and eventually consuming up to a bottle a day.

Irish people now drink around 18 litres of wine a year, up from one litre in 1990.
